Women in Business
I have been thinking about my last message / post on women taking on greater roles in business where it was once a male dominated profession and I would like to reiterate on this subject a little more.
There are so many professions out there that were once dominated by males. For instance I am a bookkeeper; my father & grandfather were both Accountants and would do all the Accounting & Bookkeeping themselves or Dentists for example did all the check-up’s & cleaning that they now have Hygienists do. Years ago a female Accountants, Doctors would all be males; or take another scenario where Dentists would do all the check-ups and the cleaning where they now have hygienists . Now we have women that are not only qualified to work in these fields but are also Firefighters, Astronauts and even Political Leaders.
We women have come so far and yet there is still territory out there that is yet to be filled by females.
Does anyone out there remember the TV program called, “All In The Family”? There was an episode where Gloria Bunker (Archie & Edith’s daughter) and her husband gave Archie Bunker a riddle. It went like this: a young boy and his father were in a serious car accident and the father was killed and the young boy is rushed to the hospital where he was to undergo surgery. The doctor takes one look at the young boy and says, I cannot operate on this boy he is my son.
This had Archie completely puzzled because in that era , women either stayed home and looked after their house or they were Secretary’s, Cashiers or Cleaning People but it was very rare to find them in high ranking positions. Now look how women have progressed over the years. A man might stay home now and look after their house & family; where before that would be unheard of.
Yes we women have certainly come so far but we still have uncharted waters yet to be discovered – we really have to give ourselves a pat on the back for what we have accomplished so far.
